Ohio LGBT State Wide Convention Poll

9e8c38-0-b30ef1-0-mainOn March 24th of this year, I proposed to James Winnett, Ohio Democratic LGBT Director, an idea that I’ve been mulling over for sometime, an Ohio LGBT State Convention, to be held before the 2010 election.

After proposing this idea, James asked me to do more work on establishing a frame work and a tentative agenda.

First let me give some detail and background.

Three main goals for State Convention: (1) Would be to have an impact on State politics and further LGBT civil rights in Ohio. (2) Would be to unite the State LGBT Community as one political voice in Ohio and (3) To further LGBT equality in Ohio.

The Ohio LGBT State Convention would be a two day event in Columbus, Ohio.

Organizations like the various Stonewall Clubs; HRC; Area Aids Task Force; Equality Ohio; Gay Churches and Gay Friendly Churches; University/College Gay Clubs; Gay Veterans; Gay Publications, etc, all would send three Delegates.

Gay Bars and Clubs could elect and send three Delegates.

Gay Ohio Elected Officials would be Delegates at Large.

Anyone not within any of the stated groups could register as a Delegate at Large.

A Platform Committee would be established before the Convention and would hold regional hearings with LGBT Community Members to establish a Unity Platform.

Now here’s the really hard part, who would come and is there enough interest to warrant an Ohio Statewide LGBT Convention?

This has never been tried in any State and surely would garner interest from around the Country and with the media.

So here’s the poll. Please forward to any of your Ohio LGBT friends and Family for their input.

I would like to suggest another goal to be considered (or the 2nd goal to be enhanced or clarified with) A unified state representation towards the national effort. Perhaps this is too early for that if there are no other states doing this, or any national convention.
I also think it is important to specifically invite/seek Straight Allies. Perhaps each organization could also have 1 or 2 straight allies as delegates. Perhaps it is assumed that straight allies are certainly welcome, but I think it is becoming clear that we need to have more of a voice from our allies as much as from ourselves. A straight person not involved in the effort may be able to identify with a straight ally more so than a LGBT person.
    My thoughts.
    Thank you,

Great idea! I didn’t vote in the poll, because, of course, I’m no longer an Ohioan and didn’t want to skew your results, but I would certainly attend if I were.
