12132598372With what is expected to be today’s announcement that Ohio Republican U.S. Senator, George Voinovich, will not seek re-election, Dare To Dream will make a predictions concerning a possible successor.

Often mentioned as being “groomed” for bigger and better things, Ohio’s 17th District Congressman, Democrat Tim Ryan, seems to be a likely candidate and possibly the front runner in a race to replace Voinovich.

Congressman Ryan has strong labor ties, being from the Mahoning Valley, and has always considered himself leaning more to the “conservative” side of the spectrum as a moderate.

congressman-ryanRyan has been highly visible in his campaigning for other Democrats, both state wide and nationally, with being a strong supporter of Barack Obama after Senator Chris Dodd dropped out of the race. Ryan had declared himself a Dodd delegate early in the primary season.

If Ryan would enter into the 2010 Ohio Senate race, it is feasible that Ohio State Senator, Democrat Capri Cafaro from Ohio’s 32 District, would be the likely big name in running for Ryan’s congressional seat.

Even if Tim Ryan doesn’t run for the vacated Voinovich seat, Democrats have a shot at an open Senate seat in this battle ground state that voted for Barack Obama in the 2008 elections and elected Democrat Sherrod Brown to the senate in 2006.

I’m hoping that Congressman Ryan runs for the seat. While it may be tough to leave his seat on the House Appropriations Committee, we need a statewide candidate like Ryan. He’s got a long, long future ahead of him and he might as well spend it in the Senate!

I think Ohio could do much better that Rep. Ryan and I sincerely hope that a better candidate will come to the fore. For example Jennifer Brunner.

I agree that Jennifer Brunner is a great choice but I don’t think she will leave the Ohio Secretary of State Office since her wonderful direction during the 2008 election. She controlled the election without a flaw…even Cuyahoga County went through the election without a major hitch. Also Brunner will be instrumental when the time to re-district happens.

There are two other names you might like and I think they have a wonderful opportunity if they decide to run for Senate.

First is Congress Member Marcy Kaptur from Toledo and the second is Congress Member Betty Sutton from Akron.

Both highly qualified and would make excellent candidates.

Tristan, you are absolutely on target with mentioning Marcy Kaptur, she has made a name for herself nationwide as one who speaks out on tough issues. Now the question would be would she run and would Ohioans have the where withal to vote for her. It is truly time for a female Senator from Ohio.
The 17th district might be willing to ignore Ryan’s boyish antics, but other parts of the state would probably insist on a higher standard of morality.
