Would Hillary Have Been Praised?

10/04/2008

David Brooks wrote a praising opinion piece on Sarah Palin’s performance in the debate for the New York Time Oct 2nd, 2008 edition. He, like many other commentators, are praising the fact that Palin made it trough the debate and giving glowing statements on her “frankness” and “folksy” style.

As I read the “feed back” from on-line readers of that Op-Ed piece, there is an observation from a lady in Missouri that I really feel does make a strong point. Would these “pundits”, like Brooks, be praising Hillary Clinton if she gave the same performance as Palin?

The on-line reader made these statements about what those same “pundits” would be saying about Hillary: “You’d say she was all style and no substance; you’d say she refused to play by the rules of the debate; you’d say she made transparent, manipulative appeal to the common folk.”

I’ve never been a big Hillary supporter but in this case I must agree with this observation and maybe they need to be hit with a “hockey puck” to see the hypocrisy?

Had Hillary Clinton smiled, winked and evaded sserious issues in the manner Palin did throughout the debate, she would have been crucified in the morning’s newspapers.

I agree that is quite an observation. I am also not really a Hillary fan, but the expectations for Hillary would have been way up there.
Unfortunately, Sarah’s were so low that all she had to do show up.
I have been trying to find a word or phrase for Sarah that is not folksy and your lucy goosey fits perfectly. I loved it!
