Pump and Run
With the high price of oil and that turning into higher prices at the “pump” it wouldn’t seem likely a “THEFT ALERT” would be made concerning your license plates but guess what…it has.
I was taken a “back” when I received a Community Forum and Newsletter from northern Summit County with the following advisory.
Many report have been filed with police departments throughout the Country regarding an unusual amount of license plates being stolen. One report recently came in regarding a women who reported that her son found his license plates missing so he called the police to file a report. The PD told him that people are stealing the plates to get free gas.
Given the rise in gas prices, people have taken to stealing plates, putting them on their car, then getting gas. The gas station will have the plate number and the owner of that plate could be trouble for “pump and run”.
Check your car periodically to be sure you still have your plates…both front and back in Ohio. Dealer plates are sometimes easier to steal than regular plates so always check and if you find them missing, file a report immediately.
When the license plates are reported as the “drive off vehicle” it’s you they contact.
Dare to Dream would like to add the following. With rising gas prices a good investment might also be a locking gas cap. A fifteen dollar cost is better than losing thirty plus dollars in gasoline.
Keep an eye on your plates and check that gas gauge to make sure you haven’t lost the tank you paid for.
